Who was the biggest mentor or inspiration in your career?
An inspiration in my career was Mark Hays. He was my very first General Manager when I worked Night Audit at a Holiday Inn in Colorado Springs. I had just graduated from Stanford, and I was working audit while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. Every morning, Mark would come in, have breakfast with the audit team, and talk about business the night before. That's when I first started thinking about hospitality as a potential career and not just a job.

Who was the biggest mentor or inspiration in your career?
One of my most important mentors was my first property Director of HR, right after I finished school and got my first management role. She met with me regularly, got to know me personally, took time to understand my goals and aspirations, and she helped me grow. That was my first real experience with an HR leader, and she made such a connection with me that I was inspired. Even though I continued in operations for some time after, she was the reason I eventually transitioned to HR, so I could strive to support and positively impact others as she had done for me.

Who was the biggest mentor or inspiration in your career?
I have had the pleasure of having my parents as my biggest inspiration. From a very early age, they stressed the importance of obtaining an education, working hard, and maintaining integrity. Through their positive example they demonstrated what one could achieve through hard work, perseverance, and resiliency. In addition, I have had several mentors throughout my career that have served to assist in my professional development and growth. I am genuinely grateful for each of them because I would not be where I am today without the investment of my mentors and the talents and gifts they shared. One of my greatest pleasures is working with young people and assisting them with interviewing skills and preparation to enter the workforce. Through this effort, I am giving back to the next generation of leaders.

My biggest mentor in my life must be my father, Wes Wheeler. He grew up a poor dairy farmer in upstate New York. As a straight-A student in high school, he enlisted in the Korean War knowing the GI Bill was his only path to college. After returning to the US, he enrolled at Cornell where he earned an MBA in Finance and Economics. Of the many things he taught me in life, two have always stood out. "Family first," and "where there is a will, there is always a way."

My greatest mentor and cheerleader is my mom. I learned from a very early age that if you wanted something you had to work hard, show commitment, dedication, and most of all persevere through the challenging times to continue to strive for your goal. My mom was a single parent with six children, and I was the youngest. She was working three jobs as I grew up, so I learned quickly how to problem solve and become independent. My brothers and sisters have been my support channel along the way. My mom continues to keep me balanced when challenges arise, and I am grateful for the foundation she provided and continues to provide today. I strive daily to be the person she aspires me to be.

My interest in the hospitality industry began at a young age watching sitcoms such as Love Boat and Fantasy Island. Growing up in a small rural community, I dreamed of hosting important guests on a cruise ship, a tropical island or in a grand hotel. My career has allowed me to arrange accommodations for presidential candidates, legendary musicians and actors (even a childhood crush). The excitement and unpredictability of the industry continue to inspire me today.

My mother is my biggest mentor and inspiration. She didn't go to college until I was in high school and worked very hard to graduate before I started college. Her devotion to her family and community made an indelible impact in my individual and corporate social responsibility. Operating under the values of respect, hard work, perseverance, and love, I've learned that investing in each of our associates is investing in our own future.
